It is so so important to look after your hair. We can spend hours in salon making someone's hair look and feel great, but to maintain this beautiful hair, you need to be looking after it properly at home.
Here are a few easy to follow tips for a good homecare routine.
Brush your hair before you shower
Hair is more vulnerable to breakage when wet, and is also more prone to tangling! Always give your hair a brush to remove any knots before your get in the shower.
If you find your hair can get quite tangled, invest in a Tangle Tamer brush (available in salon) to gently help remove these without damaging the rest of your hair.
Choose the right shampoo & conditioner for your hair type
Whether you have dry, very damaged or frizzy hair, or looking for more volume, colour protection or shine; there really is a perfect range for everyone. Your stylist can give you advice on which range would be right for you, and give your hair the best benefits.
Condition correctly
I'm sure many of us have been guilty in the past of slapping a big dollop of conditioner right on top of our heads, but this can leave you with product build up at the roots making your hair appear greasy and also weighing it down.
You only need to apply roughly a 10p sized amount through your mid lengths and ends, before combing through with a wide tooth comb. Start combing from the ends and work your way up to the scalp, to get a good even distribution.
We all like to try a little scalp massage, it's never quite the same as one in salon but it can help stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth. You can leave your conditioner on for 5 minutes then rinse thoroughly.
Take time for hair masks
Use a hair mask once a week to restore the moisture in your hair and leave it feeling nourished. If you suffer from a naturally greasy root area, then focus only on the lengths instead, where it needs to extra conditioning most. Kerastase do a variety of hair masks within their different ranges, catering for both fine and thick hair so there really is an option for everyone.
Ask us for a recommendation on what mask would be suitable for your hair.
Protect against heat
We all know that heat can be very damaging to your hair, so always make sure you use a heat protector before blowdry or using straighteners and tongs! We love Kerastase Ciment Thermique. Apply a pea sized amount through mid lengths and ends, then comb through to distribute evenly before blow-drying. This will help to shield the hair whilst also smoothing the cuticle. Opt for the medium heat setting on your hairdryer instead of the hottest, to avoid habitual heat damage.
Shield hair from the sun
When the sun comes out, we always remember to protect our skin, so why should our hair be any different? It's no secret that UV exposure can be very damaging to your skin, and the same goes for your hair.
Use a product such as Kerastase Creme UV Sublime to protect against UV exposure. This leave-in cream is enriched with Vitamin E and will prevent dryness and tame any frizz. The lightweight, non-greasy formula means you can reapply throughout the day on dry or wet hair.
Don’t forget, it’s not just when you’re abroad, if the sun is out at home, make sure you keep protected!
Don’t forget your scalp
If you notice a dry, itchy or flaky scalp, treat with a professional shampoo. Cheaper supermarket remedies may mask the problem, but do not cure. Many people find when they stop using these, the issues arise again. Ask us to recommend the right haircare for you, to actually treat the problem areas.
Get regular trims
You need to have regular haircuts to keep hair healthy and avoid breaking off at the ends. No one likes straggly, uneven hair with split ends! We generally recommend every 6-8 weeks but your stylist will be able to advise you on the best time to keep on top of your trims.
